The Best Time to Book a Golf Holiday

By the GolfConnecting Team  ·  4 min read  ·  Reviewed August 2026

Book too early and you might miss a better deal; book too late and the good tee times — and sane prices — are gone. Golf travel has its own booking rhythms, and once you know them, you stop guessing.

The Golden Rule: Golf Fills Before Flights Do

The scarce resource on a golf holiday is rarely the hotel room — it is the 9am tee time at the course everyone wants. At popular destinations in peak months, prime tee sheets fill four to eight months out. If your trip revolves around specific courses, book the golf first or simultaneously with travel, never as an afterthought.

Booking Windows by Destination Type

Marquee destinations (St Andrews, Pebble Beach, top Irish links): six to twelve months ahead, sometimes more. Ballots and advance booking systems reward the organised.

Mediterranean resort golf (Algarve, Costa del Sol, Belek): four to six months ahead for high season (spring and autumn), less for summer when heat suppresses demand and prices.

US snowbird destinations (Florida, Arizona): book winter high-season trips by early autumn. Summer is bargain season if you can handle dawn tee times and heat.

Off-the-radar gems (Eastern Europe, northern Spain): flexibility reigns; six to eight weeks out is usually fine outside local holiday periods.

Early-Bird Deals Are Real

Unlike beach package holidays, golf operators genuinely reward early commitment: locked-in green fee rates before annual increases, free extras (a bonus round, free buggies, room upgrades) and small-deposit terms. Booking the following spring during the preceding autumn typically captures the best combination of choice and price.

The Last-Minute Play

Last-minute golf bargains exist, but they are geography-dependent. They appear where capacity outstrips demand: the Costa del Sol in July, Turkey outside peak weeks, big US golf markets. They rarely appear at capacity-constrained destinations — nobody discounts Royal County Down. If you gamble on late deals, be flexible on courses and accept afternoon tee times, and the savings can hit 30 to 40 percent.

Seasonal Sweet Spots Worth Targeting

Shoulder seasons are the value kings: May and late September in Britain and Ireland, March to May and October in Iberia and Turkey, November and early December in the Gulf. You trade a small weather risk for lower prices, quieter courses and better conditions than high summer in hot climates.

A Practical Booking Timeline

Six or more months out: agree the group, pay deposits, book marquee tee times and flights. Three months: finalise remaining rounds, transfers and dinner bookings. One month: confirm every tee time in writing, check buggy bookings, arrange travel insurance if not done. One week: weather check, currency, and the group chat descends into logo-ball banter. That is the system.
