The John Deere Classic returns to the heartland this week after a one-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was a lamentable loss on the 2020 schedule, a patchwork ad-hoc attempt (and a successful one) to save the season around a global pandemic and varying local regulations that made certain tournaments unfeasible.
The Deere is one of the PGA Tour’s most important events, not because of its strength of field or purse size but because of what it means to the local Quad Cities region and the community where the title sponsor is based. That sponsor seems firmly committed to this event and keeping this tournament in this area of the country at TPC Deere Run, despite economic challenges or disadvantages to doing so. It evokes the origin story of the PGA Tour, the guts of what the schedule used to be, when players would get in their cars or busses and travel to different towns across the country putting on an annual show for that community.
The event is a bit of an outlier on the modern schedule in a way, and its loss last year was a blow to the community that holds it. Even without an actual golf tournament, the John Deere Classic still raised more than $12 million in 2020 and donated that to 465 local and regional charities.
This year will not just be a celebration of the return of its golf tournament, but also its 50th anniversary. The field is hampered by having the Open Championship the following week, the usual trans-Atlantic trip something many prefer to make with time to spare. But it’s good to have a community event with a long history on tour back on the schedule. There will be birdies, and there will be Steve Stricker.
